Principals honored as group names officers
The Indiana Association of School Principals District 1 had its end-of-the-year banquet April 25 at Shorewood Forest clubhouse in Valparaiso.
The organization named the 2008 Principals of the Year for District I. They are elementary Principal Mary Tracy (Portage), middle school Principal James Ton (Chesterton), high school Assistant Principal Guy Skrobul (Kankakee Valley) and high school Principal Dirk Flick (Whiting). The four principals will be eligible for state principal of the year honors at their respective levels. The state awards will be announced in the fall at the principal's state conference in Indianapolis.
In addition, the association named new officers.
Dave Templin, assistant principal at Crown Point High School, is the outgoing association president. He will be replaced by Mary Hoffman, principal at John Wood Elementary School in Hobart.
The other new officers are Jan Hines, vice president; Scott Graber, treasurer; Mark Gianfermi, secretary; and membership chairwoman, Lisa Patrick.
The state board representatives are Templin, Mike Hazen and Nancy Snider.

Basketball leagues for men to begin May 19
Two mens basketball leagues sponsored by the Crown Point parks department will begin May 19 at C.P. Health and Fitness, 1516 N. Main St.
The open league is for men 16 and older and will play on Tuesday nights; the 30 and older league will play on Monday nights.
Game times for both leagues will be each hour from 6 to 10 p.m.

Cop card program set to get under way today
Children 12 and younger are encouraged to take part in the Merrillville Police Department's cop card program, which begins today.
There are 48 cards available and children collecting a minimum of 24 cards will be eligible to enter a drawing for one of four new bicycles.
Children can meet officers while they are in their neighborhoods and during activities like the Fourth of July parade.
Cop card poster sets also are available for $10. The sets can be purchased from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Merrillville Police Department, 7820 Broadway. Children receiving a poster set also will be eligible to enter the bicycle drawing.
The deadline to enter the drawing is Aug. 29.

Economic development meeting was canceled
The town's Economic Development Committee meeting Wednesday night was canceled due to a lack of a quorum.
The meeting hasn't been rescheduled.
CROWN POINT
Police seeking victims of vehicle burglaries
The Police Department is asking residents for help with crimes believed to have been committed by two suspects who have been arrested for vehicle break-ins that occurred May 1 and 2.
The department's detective bureau is continuing to investigate the incidents and has uncovered more stolen items taken from Crown Point and surrounding communities. The department is asking anyone who had items stolen on those days and did not report a theft to contact Detective Sgt. Eldon Strong at (219) 663-2131, ext. 115, to claim their property.
