Japan in photos
"Cultural Memory in Japan" continues through June 30 at Mueller Hall, 1300 Chapel Drive. Featured in the exhibit are photogrpahs taken by eight Valparaiso students who participated in an 11-day research trip to Japan in early March. The 17 photographs represent the grandeur of both contemporary and historical Japan, as well as highlight the aesthetic attention to detail found in Japan's everyday life. Mueller Hall is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Abstract art
Abstract art from the Brauer Museum of Art's permanent collection is on display through Aug. 4 at the Brauer Museum of Art, Center for the Arts, 1709 Chapel Drive. Abstract works in a variety of media will be featured in this exhibit, including many which will have their first public showing at Brauer Museum. Shakespeare workshop
Young Actors Shakespeare Workshop is July 7 through Aug. 1 with performances Aug. 2 and 3 at the VU Center for the Arts, 1709 Chapel Drive.
Workshop tuition is now $250. The 22nd annual workshop will prepare a production of Shakespeare's "The Two Noble Kinsmen" and introduce children who are at least 8 years old and have not graduated from high school to the basics of theatre performance and production. Rehearsals are 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. or from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for two groups of children 8 to 13 years old, and from 3 to 5:30 p.m. for older youth, Monday through Thursday. Summer events
VALPARAISO | A variety of athletic camps, educational programs for youth, religious retreats and other events will draw hundreds of visitors to Valparaiso University's campus this summer.
Events will include the long-standing Light in Thy Light retreat for Lutheran youth, being held for the 25th consecutive year, as well as newer events such as Camp Invention, a week-long program for children that will provide fun, hands-on activities fostering creative thinking.
Among the events being held on campus from June through August are:
June 27 - 28 n Girls Basketball Team Camp for high school varsity and junior varsity teams and coaches;
June 29 - July 2 n National Dance Association Dance Camp teaching choreography in a variety of styles;
June 30 - July 2 n Crusader Football Kids Camp for boys and girls entering grades 2 through 8;
July 3 - 25 n A program for college students from China that includes special classes and cultural and historical field trips;
July 7 - 10 n Volleyball Camp for boys and girls in grades 6 through 12;
July 7 n 11 n Camp Invention, a day camp for children entering grades 1 to 6 to make their own "inventions" while
integrating science, math, history and the arts.
July 7 - 11 n United Marriage Encounter retreat for couples interested in improving their communication and developing their relationships;
July 7 - 19 n Intensive Chamber Music Program for high school and college musicians interested in developing their individual and ensemble performance skills;
July 7 - Aug. 3 n Young Actors Shakespeare Workshop for youth ages 8 through 18, who will prepare the romance "The Two Noble Kinsmen" for public performances;
July 10 - 11 n 21st Century Scholars program for 9th grade students in Northwest Indiana, which will prepare them to think about searching and applying for college;
July 11 - 15 n Focolare, an interdenominational religious retreat for families;
July 14 - 17 n National Cheerleading Association Cheer Camp;
July 18 - 20 n Catholic Youth Xperience Camp, a retreat organized by the Diocese of Gary;
July 21 - 23 n Boys Soccer Camp for high school players aspiring to play at the college level;
July 21 - 24 n Girls Basketball Day Camp for those entering grades 2 through 8;
July 23 - 27 n Universal Cheerleaders Association Cheer Camp;
July 28 - Aug. 1 n Boys Basketball Academy for players ages 8through 14;
