CROWN POINT | The city will pay a Kansas City-based architecture firm that specializes in sports complexes up to $10,000 to create a design for a proposed sportsplex on East North Street.

The Crown Point Board of Works on Wednesday the payment to 360 Architecture.

Also Wednesday, a representative from ABW Cos., the company the city previously hired to oversee planning for the sportsplex, gave an update on the project, which was introduced in May.

Stephanie Neumann, a representative of ABW, said she has been working with the mayor to come up with a plan that fits the city's needs and is financially viable. They have created a preliminary plan, which includes an indoor facility.

The project will be financially self-sufficient based on user fees, leases with local youth groups, bonds and events that ABW will bring into the complex.

Neumann said 360 Architecture will create renderings for the project. Once made, the renderings will help determine a more exact budget.

According to its Web site, 360 Architecture specializes in the planning and design of sports facilities. The firm has worked on projects such as the New Meadowlands Stadium for the New York Giants and New York Jets, the Oakland A's Cisco Field and the University of Louisville's new practice facility.

Mayor David Uran said the architect's renderings should be complete in about two weeks, and the design funding will come out of the city's parks and recreation budget.

The city signed a contract with ABW to develop an initial plan for the sports complex. While that plan won't cost the city anything, the city will pay the company if it decides to use the plan and have ABW develop the site. The city also will pay if it decides to use the plan but asks another developer to execute the plan, according to the agreement.
