HOBART | One flood-damaged road has opened with one to go, city officials said Thursday.
The Third Street bridge, which has been closed since Lake George swelled to flood stage Sept. 14, was reopened on Wednesday afternoon, said Assistant Public Works Director John Dubach.
Repairs to the bridge included restoring both the sidewalks and washed out approaches.
Lake George, adjacent to the bridge, reached a record depth of 22 feet 9 inches following the torrential rains, Assistant Fire Chief Steve Mast said.
The Lake County Highway Department, which is responsible for bridge maintenance in the county, will be picking up the $100,000 for the repairs to the bridge, said City Engineer Stephen Truchan.
Another roadway, 73rd Avenue, which closed due to a collapsed culvert, should be reopening in a few days, Truchan said.
"The culvert is in but they still have to make repairs to the road," Truchan said.
That work, which is being handled by Boyd Construction, will cost approximately $100,000, with the county and city splitting the cost, Truchan said.
Another road closure, not related to the recent flooding, ended this week. Truchan said that at 61st Avenue and Colorado Street, traffic is now reopened to the east, north and south of the intersection.
Traffic to the west of the intersection still has not been reopened, he said.
The $6.9 million road project, which began in late April, calls for widening and improving 61st Avenue starting at Marcella Boulevard on the west and ending just east of Colorado Street.
