Departing prosecutor endorses assistant

Cook County State's Attorney Richard Devine, who is preparing to step down from the post after holding it for nearly a decade, endorsed his ranking deputy yesterday as his choice for his successor.

Devine says he is supporting 46-year-old first assistant State's Attorney Robert Milan, who joined the office as a lawyer 19 years ago. Milan is one of six Democratic candidates who will compete in the Feb. 5 primary.

The winner of the Democratic primary is expected to face Cook County Board member Tony Peraica, a Republican who lost the 2006 election for board president to Todd Stroger.
