Gift packs | Lansing

The Lansing Kiwanis Golden K Club is preparing its sixth annual gift pack program for about 200 veterans living in Manteno, Ill. The packs are loaded with soft candy, cookies, chips, fruit, chewing gum and packs of raisins. There are also packs with sugar-free snacks. Drop off donated items at the Eisenhower Center, 2550 178th St. Items should be new and in bulk packages, or individually wrapped. Cash donations can also be made. The deadline to deliver items is July 28 when the club will prepare gift packs.

Lansing Historical Society still needs volunteers to help copy the Lansing Journal newspapers in the society's museum.

Lansing Historical Society will host a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 in the Community Room at Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave.

Historical Society | Calumet City

Calumet City Historical Society's current exhibit features artifacts, model cars, model trucks, model gasoline stations and photographs of gasoline stations along the original Route 66 from local citizens. It runs through January 2009. The museum, 760 Wentworth Ave. in Calumet City, is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays and by appointment. The society meets monthly and area residents are invited to become members.

Support group | Lansing

A depression/bipolar support group will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, with the first meeting taking place July 17, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Glenwood-Lansing Road and Wentworth Avenue.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly IL 13339 meets from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the Eisenhower Fitness Center, 2550-178th St. After weigh-ins is a short meeting and then discussions on healthy and nutritious eating and medical topics. The group is a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging weight loss, improved health and fellowship.

GARDEN WALK | Gary

Miller Garden Club holds its annual walk from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 19 and 20, rain or shine. The ninth annual tour, Secret Gardens: Red, White & Blooming, begins at the aquatorium in Marquette Park along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Free bus transportation will be provided from the aquatorium to each garden site but will end at 2 p.m. A guided bicycle tour starts at 10;30 a.m. July 19. Tickets cost $6 in advance and 47 that day. Lunch will be available from the Miller Bakery Cafe for $8. Buy tickets at Lake Street Gallery, and Ayers Realty on Lake Street, Marquette Perk Coffee Shop at Shelby and Locust, The Baker's House on Miller Avenue or from any Miller Garden Club member.
