Hammond shooting victim dies

A 28-year-old Hammond man who was shot multiple times on Oct. 18 succumbed to his injuries early Monday morning.

Val Diggins of the 6400 block of Jefferson Avenue was pronounced dead at 3:55 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Diggins was shot multiple times on Oct. 18 in the 1900 block of E. Summer Street in Hammond, the spokesman said. He was initially transported to St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers in Hammond and later transferred to the Oak Lawn hospital, which houses a trauma center.

Details surrounding the shooting were not immediately available from Hammond police early Monday morning.
