A boil advisory remains in effect Thursday for some Schererville properties and will likely continue through Sunday morning, a town official said.
The boil advisory is in effect within the boundaries of U.S. 30 to the north, 83rd Lane to the south, the town border to the east and Memory Lane Cemetery to the west.
The order was issued at 6 p.m. Wednesday following a water main break on Pine Island Drive that morning that caused a drop in water pressure.
Jeff Huet, director of public works for Schererville, said the advisory will remain in effect until the town is able to provide two clean tests to the state laboratory, 24-hours apart. The first test is going to the lab this morning, he said, with the second being sent tomorrow morning.
"Typically after 24 hours, the analyst will know whether it is clean or not," Huet said. "At minimum, (the boil advisory) will be in effect until Saturday but more likely Sunday."
Huet said the water is safe for washing or flushing a toilet, but the state must determine whether it is safe for consumption.
"This is precautionary and to follow (Indiana Department of Environmental Management) regulations," he said. "We have no reason to believe there was any contamination to our water supply when we lost pressure."
In order to ensure water is safe for consumption, residents in the impacted area are advised to boil water at a rapid boil for at least 15 minutes or to purchase bottled water for consumption.
