CHICAGO | Bond was set Monday at $200,000 for a Lynwood woman whom police say caused a car crash that left her passenger, a Chicago man, dead.
Marquitta Cross, 41, appeared in court for a bond hearing before Associate Judge Israel Desierto, who set the bond for the auto incident that occurred Feb. 28 just before 3 a.m.
Cross was booked at the Cook County Jail Monday afternoon and had yet to post the required 10 percent of the bond amount in order to stay out of jail while her case is pending
Cross is scheduled to appear at the Criminal Courts building, 2600 S. California Ave., again on May 18 for a preliminary hearing.
Although the incident occurred nearly two months ago, Cross was not arrested until Sunday. She faces a charge of aggravated driving under the influence. Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said Cross faces three to 14 years in prison if found guilty.
Illinois State Police officials say that Cross was driving south on the Bishop Ford Expressway when she lost control of her 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo at about 111th Street in Chicago's Pullman neighborhood.
Her car went to the left into the median, rolled over and ultimately struck a tree. Paramedics on the scene reported a strong odor of alcohol on Cross' breath and after a test was done, her blood-alcohol content was found to be 0.19, Simonton said. The legal limit is 0.08.
Michael Mayfield, 42, of Chicago, was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour after the incident. Mayfield was Cross' friend and a passenger in the vehicle Cross drove, Simonton said.
