Ronak Parikh, of Crown Point, was named to the fall semester dean's list at Indiana University. Eligibility for the dean's list is reserved for students who complete at least 12 graded credit hours in a single semester, earning at least a 3.7 GPA. Parikh is a pre-med sophomore majoring in neuroscience.
ST. XAVIER U. | Chicago
This month, under the leadership of President Judith Dwyer, St. Xavier University fundraising surpassed $30 million in the form of restricted and unrestricted funds, land and buildings since she assumed the presidency in October, 2003. This is the most ever raised at St. Xavier during a similar length of time. The total reflects gifts pledged and received from individuals, foundations, corporate support and realized estate gifts.
COMMUNITY KITCHENS | West Lafayette
Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor a workshop called Starting a Community Kitchen. It will be held at five different locations across Indiana, including a program from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 9 in Crown Point. The teaching team will discuss topics such as sanitation requirements, the costs of starting a kitchen, staffing considerations, liability issues and facility inspections. Along with the teaching team, a local financial representative and an economic development representative will make up of a panel to discuss financing aspects of starting a commercial kitchen. They will speak about grants, loans and other available assistance programs. Keener will talk about the requirements that facilities need to fulfill before they can become regulated kitchens. Some of these requirements include washable, non-stick surfaces and sloped floors. He also will discuss how you can turn an existing building into a kitchen. Registration is $75 per individual or $60 per

IVY TECH | Indianapolis
Ivy Tech Community College has announced plans to award Follett Higher Education Group an eight-year contract for the management of 27 bookstores throughout the statewide community college system. The two parties have a letter of intent and are currently working through the contract details for a July 1 launch. The agreement will result in renovations to various campus bookstores, improvements in services and substantial savings opportunities to more than 110,000 Ivy Tech students. The college expects to transition its current bookstore staff members over to Follett while keeping employees and preserving current compensation and benefits. Final contract detail negotiations are ongoing, but at this time the college expects to receive a $6 million signing bonus spread over the term of the contract. Follett has also committed to providing $1.65 million in capital improvements and $650,000 worth of point of sale equipment deployment. Follett services five million students and more than
400,000 faculty through more than 800 stores, including other Indiana locations at IPFW, Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame.
VALPARAISO U. | Valparaiso
Two Valparaiso University students from Northwest Indiana competed in the regional round of a national business contest sponsored by Delta Epsilon Chi. The students competed in several business simulations and case studies held during the Michigan State Conference of Delta Epsilon Chi, a national collegiate organization for business students. The competition is designed to develop the knowledge and skills of Delta Epsilon Chi members in different fields of business and various industries, as well as provide opportunities to interact with business professionals and network with peers around the country. Mark Boeckman, of Munster, is a sophomore finance and management major. He competed in two events for Sports & Entertainment Marketing. He is the son of Scott and Kathryn Boeckman and a member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church. Cori Ellis, of Chesterton, is a junior marketing and communication major who competed in the Fashion Merchandising category. She is the daughter of Daniel and
Shelley Ellis.
EARLHAM COLLEGE | Richmond
Britany Winston, an Earlham College sophomore and daughter of Walander Winston of Gary, has completed Earlham's Introduction to Caving course at the Richmond school. The course included instruction in technique, navigation, environmental concerns and safety. The course culminated in a weekend caving trip in southern Indiana.
ROSE-HULMAN INSTITUTE | Terre Haute
Erin Rumley, daughter of Susan and Timothy Rumley, of Portage, has been named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute. To be named to the dean's list, students must earn at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
VALPARAISO U. | Valparaiso
Valparaiso University students Katelyn Kooy and Rachel Heinrich, both of Munster; Emily Peters, of Merrillville; and Jessica Masterson, of Valparaiso; are participating in a spring break service project in New Orleans this month. Sponsored by Valparaiso's Union Board, the trip includes three days of service activities. Students will spend one day cleaning up a city park located in one of the hardest hit areas by Hurricane Katrina, help rebuild and paint a facility for an after-school care program in on another day, and assist with pet rescue efforts on the third day. Kooy is a senior political science and history major. She is the daughter of Paul and Barbara Kooy. Heinrich is a sophomore international business and German major. She serves as the Union Board Out and About Chair and was in charge of organizing the trip. She is the daughter of Thomas Heinrich. Emily Peters is a senior biology and French major. She is the daughter of Patrick Peters and Mary Masleid. Jessica Masterson is
a senior psychology and sociology major. She is the daughter of Timothy Masterson and Tammy Matthai.
