CEDAR LAKE | It appears plans to move to a biweekly recycling-curbside pickup have been tossed before they began.
Councilmen, who formally adopted a biweekly recycling schedule last month, now say they intend to make their final decision on a monthly charge for continued weekly recycling collections with Allied Waste/Republic when they meet next at 7 p.m. June 16.
Town Administrator Ian Nicolini is expected to make a recommendation, based on staff evaluations, for the monthly rate to residents and the amount, if any, the town will pay to subsidize it.
The current $15 monthly rate has cost the town $15.07 a month. Allied Waste wants $15.83 per household per month in the current contract negotiations.
Councilman Robert Carnahan, R-1st, said he thinks a one-year contract rather than anything longer would be best as it would position the town to go out for bids in a competitive marketplace next year.
In another matter, the council in a 4-3 vote removed Larry Nagy from the Cedar Lake Plan Commission. In asking to remove Nagy, Councilman Greg Parker, R-7th, referred to his letter to the council, but gave no reason for his motion. Parker also is on the Plan Commission.
Councilman John Foreman, D-2nd, opposed Nagy's ouster, citing Nagy's many years as a local businessman.
