Chesterton's Zack Novak has verbally committed
to play basketball for the University of
Michigan.
Wolverines coach John Beilein offered a
scholarship to the 6-foot-5 guard/forward during his official visit
to the Ann Arbor campus Friday and he accepted on the
spot.
"He came and watched me against Merrillville
(in the sectional) and said we'd take care of it when I came up,"
Novak said. "He wanted me to think about it and make sure I got
what I wanted. I'm definitely relieved. It gets a little
overwhelming at times. It's nice to know what I'm going to be doing
in the future now. I've got a really good opportunity coming up and
I'm looking forward to it."
Novak, the school's career and single-season
scoring leader, had also been offered by Valparaiso, Colorado
State, IPFW and Oakland among numerous schools who were interested
in him.
"The system they play in is the same thing we
run (at Chesterton)," he said. "It fits me pretty well. I really
like (Beilein). Michigan's one of the best universities in the
country for sports and academics. It felt like a good fit. They
need people to come in and shoot it. If I do what I need to do in
the summer, the playing time is going to be
there."
Novak can sign officially April 16.
