A police officer and a bank robbery suspect were shot following a Tuesday robbery and chase that began in Calumet City.
Three suspects were later caught, two after a search that shut down the Bishop Ford Freeway and clogged traffic in the south suburbs and Northwest Indiana.
Police said they got a jump on the bank robbery suspects after a customer used a cell phone inside the bank to alert authorities to the crime under way.
In the ensuing slow-speed vehicle chase and foot chase into a wooded area, an officer and a suspect were shot.
The Calumet City police officer is listed in stable condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the arm.
At a news conference Tuesday, Calumet City Police Chief Edward L. Gilmore credited local police agencies for assisting in the case.
"This was a great example of police jurisdictions cooperating that came together at the right time," he said. "I can't tell you how pleased I am at how my officers conducted themselves."
The incident began at 2:14 p.m. Tuesday when police received information about a robbery taking place at Citibank, 1779 River Oaks Drive.
Gilmore noted they knew some inside information while the crime was in progress and were on the way while the suspects were still inside.
"A very astute person in the bank who had a cell phone -- and that call led us to be en route while they were still in the bank," he said.
Along with responding to the scene, authorities also drove onto the Bishop Ford because they knew it could be an escape route, he said. Calumet City and other responding police agencies soon saw a dark-colored Cadillac sedan with the robbery suspects inside, and police cars attempted to block it in.
During their apparent attempt to evade police, the suspects' vehicle blew a tire when it struck a barrier and crashed near 130th Street and the Beaubien Woods Forest Preserve.
The three suspects abandoned the vehicle, running west across the Bishop Ford, with one suspect quickly being taken into custody.
Shots rang out along the highway, with one police officer reportedly shot in the leg. Officers returned fire, striking one suspect in the arm. The two suspects ran into a wooded area near 130th Street and the Bishop Ford.
The interstate was closed off while police initiated a search in Beaubien Woods. Police helicopters circled overhead.
At 3:35 p.m., one suspect came out of the woods with his arms raised in the air near 135th Street. He had been shot in the arm.
At 5:28 p.m., the third suspect was taken into custody by Burnham police at 142nd Street and Manistee Avenue.
All the cash and a weapon were recovered.
One suspect is in the custody of Calumet City police, another is in the hospital, and the third is with Burnham police.
Nearby Carver Military Academy was placed on lockdown to safeguard students from about 2:30 until 5:45 p.m.
Juliana Magana, of Chicago, was one of dozens of family members to gather outside the school waiting for students to be dismissed.
Magana said she was shocked to find a manhunt under way near the school when she arrived just after dismissal time to pick up her brother.
"It's usually quiet, and there's never any traffic," she said.
Traffic on the Bishop Ford was brought to a near standstill by the chase and search, and alternative routes quickly became snarled as motorists were routed off the highway and police and emergency vehicles rushed to and from the scene.
Participating police agencies included Chicago, Illinois State Police, Burnham, Hammond, Mokena, Lansing, Forest Preserve District, Riverdale, Cook County and Markham.
Gilmore said he will release more information on the wounded officer Wednesday.
