MERRILLVILLE | An argument between a 36-year-old Merrillville man and his pregnant wife became violent Sunday morning when the man kicked her in the stomach, police said.
Oscar Hinojosa was with his wife, who is six months pregnant, and her friend in Chicago Heights when the couple started arguing, Lake County court records allege. The argument became physical when the group returned to Hinojosa's home in the 7500 block of Marshall Street, the court documents state.
Hinojosa is charged with misdemeanor counts of domestic battery and interference with reporting a crime. Police are seeking felony battery, attempted feticide and pointing a firearm charges.
Merrillville police Detective George Fields said the victim told police Hinojosa accused her of cheating on him and threw her and her friend to the ground several times. Hinojosa also kicked his wife in the stomach, legs and thighs, Merrillville police allege.
Fields said during the argument, Hinojosa pointed a handgun at the victim's head and stomach and said he was going to "take care of the baby."
He hit his wife in the chest with the gun and took away cell phones from both women to keep them from calling police, court documents state.
Fields said the victim suffered bruises on her arms, chest, stomach and hand and was taken to Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville. The victim and her baby were doing well, police said.
The friend of Hinojosa's wife also suffered injuries to her neck and thumb in the incident, court records allege.
