DYER | A 45-year-old Schererville man was arrested Tuesday after leading police on a chase into Illinois, authorities said.

The chase started at 3:08 p.m. after police received calls about a black Ford Mustang driving recklessly on U.S. 30 near Great Lakes Drive, Dyer police said. The driver, John P. Garcia, sped off when a police cruiser approached him, authorities said.

Garcia drove into Chicago Heights and hit a tree near the intersection of Torrence Avenue and Steger Road. He then got out of the car and began running, police said.

He was eventually stopped by officers and was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Dyer.

Garcia remained in the Lake County Jail on Wednesday on a fraud charge from Schererville, police said. He also is expected to be charged with resisting law enforcement.
