PORTAGE — One person was killed when a train collided with a vehicle at about 4:55 p.m. Monday at U.S. 12 and County Line Road, according to a news release from the Porter County Coroner's Office.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said that according to witnesses a white Chevy Impala driven by a female was traveling south on County Line Road behind a school bus. After the bus crossed the train tracks it came to a stop and when the female driver of the Impala came to a stop it was on the tracks. An eastbound Norfolk & Southern train then struck the car, Harris said. The car came to rest on the east side of County Line Road and the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Porter County Coroner’s Office.

Harris said the accident is still being investigated at this time and the identity of the female driver from Porter County is being withheld until her family is notified. Gary police are also investigating the accident.

The Porter County Coroner’s Office is performing toxicology of the woman, however drugs and alcohol are not believed to have played a role in the accident.
