MERRILLVILLE | Town employees might soon receive a pay increase, but some town leaders wish more can be offered during tough financial times.
Town Councilman Richard Hardaway said councilmen will vote on a $2,000-per-year salary increase for police officers and a $1,500-per-year salary increase for other town employees during the council meeting Tuesday at Town Hall, 7820 Broadway.
Hardaway said he spoke with some employees who said they would be appreciate a raise, but he is sure there are others who think the raise isn't enough.
Hardaway added the Town Council hasn't voted for a pay increase for members in the last five years, but has voted for employee raises a few times in recent years.
"Employees come first in my opinion," Hardaway said.
Merrillville Police Chief Joseph Petruch is pleased about possible increases.
The Police Department has been short staffed, Petruch said, and officers have been seeking higher pay since last year to attract new officers to the force.
The department is currently seeking applications for patrolman.
Petruch said the raise also is needed to keep current officers from leaving the department for higher paying jobs.
