MERRILLVILLE — A 32-year-old Gary man accused of murder at a Motel 6 was formally charged Wednesday in Lake Criminal Court, police said.

Laurence T. Richmond Jr. was taken to Lake County Jail on Tuesday on preliminary charges and formally charged Wednesday in connection with the murder of Patrick T. Mbi, according to the Merrillville Police Department.

Mbi, whose age and last known address was not immediately known, was transported to the hospital and later died from injuries suffered in a fight at the motel, police said.

Merrillville police were called about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday to the Motel 6 in the 8300 block of Louisiana Street to investigate a report of a man down, Cmdr. Jeff Rice said. Evidence collected led investigators to apprehend Richmond.

As of Wednesday afternoon, all attempts to notify any family members, friends or acquaintances of Mbi have been unsuccessful, police said.

Anyone who knows the victim or has information about the homicide should contact Detective Sean Buck at 219-648-2255.
