GARY — Police say they have filed murder charges in an eight-year cold case against a 34-year-old man Thursday amid allegations he fatally shot two people in August 2010.

Detective Cpl. James Bond filed charges against Jesse Carter IV, of Merrillville, according to Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield.

Carter allegedly shot a man during an armed robbery in the 1700 block of Grant Street in one incident and another man while committing a burglary in the 1300 block of Johnson Street, she said.

Detectives were not able to positively establish Carter's identity until now, Westerfield said.

"Through tireless efforts over the years, his identity was discovered," she said in a news release.

Carter IV is charged with murder in the perpetration of a robbery and attempted armed robbery for the incident on Grant Street. In the Johnson Street incident, he was charged with murder in perpetration of a burglary, burglary while armed with a deadly weapon and attempted armed robbery, police said. He is currently in custody.

Anyone with additional information on these incidents is urged to contact the Lake County/Gary Metro Homicide Unit at 219-755-3855 or the Crime Tip Line at 866-CRIME-GP.
