GRIFFITH — Police asked residents Wednesday to lock car doors and report anything suspicious following a rash of thefts from unlocked vehicles.
Griffith police have taken several auto burglary reports in the past few weeks, Cmdr. Keith Martin said. In most cases, the vehicle was left unlocked and the theft occurred in the early morning hours.
Items taken include loose change and lawn care equipment. In one case, a gun was taken early Monday from a vehicle parked in the 600 block of Wheeler Street.
The department is pursing leads and taking steps to combat the thefts, Martin said.
Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call Martin at 219-924-7503, ext. 257. To remain anonymous, call 219-922-3085.
Residents are asked to immediately call 911 to report any suspicious activity, lock car doors, park in well-lighted areas and set car alarms.
Martin said some people may think leaving a vehicle unlocked will prevent a burglar from breaking its windows. However, no vehicles in the area where the thefts occurred that were left locked had their windows broken, he said.
