CALUMET CITY — A 9-year-old Hammond boy has died following a car crash Monday near Torrence Avenue and Michigan City Road.

Jose Antonio Martinez, of the 6300 block of Madison Street in Hammond, was pronounced dead at 7:38 p.m. Monday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

His cause of death was ruled to be craniocervical injuries in an automobile collision, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police were dispatched about 6:56 p.m. to the crash site for a report of a two-vehicle crash, according to a news release from the Calumet City Police Department.

One vehicle traveling southbound on Torrence attempted to turn east onto Michigan City Road when it was struck on the passenger side by a northbound vehicle, police said.

The southbound vehicle had several occupants, including Martinez, who were all transported to hospitals, police said.

Police did not indicate which vehicle had the right-of-way in the news release. The Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating.
