GARY — Fires at two abandoned churches in the city's Brunswick section Sunday night appear to have been intentionally set, a fire official said.

Gary firefighters were dispatched about 7:37 p.m. to a church at West Fifth Avenue and Clinton Street, said Mark Jones, chief of operations for the Fire Department.

While firefighters were still on scene at the first fire, they were again dispatched about 8:30 p.m. to a fire at a vacant church near West Second Avenue and Gerry Street, Jones said. The second church is about three blocks from the first.

Both fires appeared to be incendiary, and police were notified, he said.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters remained on scene at the fire at Fifth and Clinton for about two hours. Firefighters were on scene at the second fire for nearly four hours, Jones said.

Damage at both buildings likely was extensive, though full reports were not yet completed, Jones said.
