CROWN POINT — A man is accused of child neglect on allegations he put alcohol in a baby's formula Tuesday.

Police were dispatched Tuesday to a residence in the 300 block of Clark Road in Gary after receiving reports a four-month-old child was unconscious, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The child's mother told police she left the child with her fiance's sister's boyfriend, Christian Reed, while she went to work, the affidavit states.

The child appeared to be acting sluggish and “zoned out,” the mother said, after Reed gave him a bottle, the affidavit states.

The child was transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus, where a blood test revealed he had a 0.27 blood-alcohol content. The child was then transported to a Chicago hospital.

Reed told police he mixed “crumbs” from an empty baby formula container with an unknown liquid in a water bottle he found in the baby's room.

He said he did not know there was alcohol in the water bottle when he mixed it with the baby formula, the affidavit states.

Reed, 27, was charged Friday in Lake Criminal Court with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a level 3 felony.

Reed was arrested Tuesday, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

He is not afforded bail on the charges, court records state.
