PORTAGE — A woman and her mother took the law into their own hands Thursday morning, capturing a man who allegedly stole her car hours before.

Just after 8 a.m. Thursday, the woman reported to police that someone stole her 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt from outside of her home in the 5500 block of Mulberry Avenue. The woman told police she had gone out to warm up the car, went in to ready her children, and when she returned less than five minutes later, it was gone.

A little more than two hours later, the woman and her mother were on the way to the grocery store. While stopped on Mulberry Avenue at Willowcreek Road, the stolen car pulled up alongside them.

According to the police report, the mom jumped out of the car and began yelling at the man, later identified as James Broadway, 35, of Portage. When Broadway opened the car door, the mom pulled him from the car and the two women sat on him, called 911 and waited for police.

According to police, Broadway refused to say anything. He was arrested and faces charges of felony auto theft and driving while suspended. He was transported to Porter County Jail.

The car was released back to the woman.
