CROWN POINT — A man murdered Tuesday was allegedly "eviscerated" by a pimp after a money dispute at a Merrillville motel, according to court records.
Laurence T. Richmond Jr. is charged in Lake Criminal Court with murder on allegations he repeatedly stabbed Patrick Tangye Mbi on Tuesday outside Motel 6, 8290 Louisiana St., documents state.
Mbi, 44, was found by police about 2 a.m. outside the motel suffering from an "eviscerated" stomach, documents state.
Mbi identified his assailant as a young black male, but died at Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus before he could speak further with detectives.
A search of the victim's cell phone suggested he arranged to meet a prostitute at the Super 8 Motel, located across the street from Motel 6, before his death.
Surveillance footage from the Super 8 motel showed Mbi being chased through the motel's lobby by a heavy-set bearded man in a red undershirt.
The man, identified as Richmond, approached the front desk at the Super 8 while detectives spoke with the motel's manager.
He was taken into custody by police, who noted he had red stains on his pants and shirt, documents state.
A search of Richmond turned up two folding knives and a cell phone, documents state. A woman in Richmond's motel room also was taken into custody.
She told police Richmond, who she knew as "Scuzz" or "Scrubs," was responsible for scheduling her "massage" appointments at the motel, documents state.
She said she met with Mbi in her motel room, but there was a disagreement about payment, and Mbi grabbed her arms, documents state.
She said Richmond chased Mbi out of the motel, and returned later with a red substance on his head, documents state.
Richmond declined to provide police a statement, documents state. Richmond is jailed without bond, according to court records.
Merrillville Police Detective Sean Buck said Thursday detectives are still searching for Mbi's family to provide them notification of Mbi's death.
