Sheriff's police arrested a Gary man and seized evidence of heroin distribution while executing two separate search warrants within the past week in Gary, a spokesman said.
Jason Hopkins, 32, of Gary, was arrested Nov. 28 when the Lake County Sheriff's Drug Task Force executed a search warrant in the city's Midtown section, sheriff's spokesman Emiliano Perez said.
Hopkins was arrested on charges of possession of cocaine and distribution of heroin, Perez said.
The Sheriff's Drug Task Force on Tuesday executed a search warrant in the 1300 block of Delaware Street, seizing evidence related to the distribution of heroin, Perez said.
Police still are investigating, and charges in the case are pending, he said.
Lake County has recorded 141 drug overdose deaths in 2017 as of Dec. 1, police said. That number is up from 2016, when 114 overdose deaths were recorded the entire year.
So far this year, heroin has caused 20 deaths; a heroin-Fentanyl mix caused 13; Fentanyl, 43; and cocaine, nine. Other controlled substances were blamed for 56 deaths.
