VALPARAISO — Jeffrey John Smar has now been charged with allegedly committing three armed robberies this month in Porter County.
A probable cause affidavit filed in Porter Superior Court this week also ties Smar to armed robberies committed in Winfield last weekend.
A second suspect — seen in a surveillance video during a robbery Saturday at La Posh Salon in Winfield — was taken into custody Tuesday night, Winfield Town Marshal Dan Ball said. The second suspect is a 46-year-old Hebron man, he said.
Smar, 47, of Hebron, was charged in Porter County with felony robbery for the Dec. 1 robbery of the Smoke Shop in Hebron; the Dec. 7 robbery of The Designer's Club salon on Ind. 2 in Center Township and the Dec. 11 robbery of the Country Kitchen in Hebron.
Smar allegedly made off with more than $600 from the salon and $300 from the restaurant, according to the affidavit.
Smar is also a suspect in the robbery at La Posh Salon, 7853 E. 108th Ave., and a robbery Sunday at Pizza Hut, 10889 Randolph St., Winfield.
When Smar was arrested Dec. 11, police found receipts in the pocket of a tan jacket from a business that had been robbed in Winfield, according to the filing.
In all three Porter County cases, Smar allegedly brandished a handgun and demanded money. In two incidents, he fled in a white Buick and in the salon robbery, fled in a tan Honda.
When police began surveillance of Smar's home on County Road 600 West near Hebron, they spotted a white Buick in a garage at the residence and a beige Honda in the driveway. Both vehicles were registered to Smar's mother.
In addition, police located a silver revolver wrapped in a rug outside the rear of the home; found multiple tan jackets, as described in two of the robberies, inside the home along with a black Purdue jacket described as being worn in the Smoke Shop robbery.
Smar will have an initial hearing via video conference at 2:30 p.m. Thursday before Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford.
