MERRILLVILLE — Police took a person of interest into custody and opened a homicide investigation Tuesday after a man died from injuries he suffered in a fight at a motel.

Merrillville police were called about 1:30 a.m. to the Motel 6 in the 8300 block of Louisiana Street to investigate a report of a man down, Cmdr. Jeff Rice said.

The man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and later died, he said.

The case remains under investigation, and police continued talking with witnesses. Rice said detectives anticipated seeking charges in the near future.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call Detective Sean Buck at 219-769-3722, ext. 348.

The Lake County coroner's office had not yet released the man's identity, pending notification of family.
