CHICAGO — A 17-year-old Whiting boy died Monday at an Illinois hospital after he was shot in the head while driving in the city's Hegewisch neighborhood, officials said.

Ralph R. Cancel was shot about 5:55 p.m. Sunday in the 4000 block of East 134th Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office and Chicago police.

The teen was in the driver's seat of a vehicle when another vehicle approached and someone in the second vehicle fired shots, police said. A passenger in Cancel's vehicle took control and drove him to Franciscan Health Hammond.

Cancel later was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 12:35 p.m. Monday.

Chicago police said the shooting remained under investigation.
