GARY — A 20-year-old woman from Rochester, Indiana, was robbed Monday after traveling to the city's Glen Park section to buy an iPhone, police said.

The woman told police she arranged the purchase on Facebook and was robbed after arriving in Gary by a man who put a gun to her head, took her money and ran south.

Gary police responded about 2:30 p.m. to the 4200 block of Jackson Street for a report of an armed robbery, Lt. Thomas Pawlak said.

The man was described as black, about 5-foot-9 and 140 pounds, with a black Bulls hat, a black leather jacket and black jeans. He had a silver semi-automatic handgun.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 219-881-1210. To remain anonymous, call 866-CRIME-GP.

Anyone using social media to buy or sell items in Gary is encouraged to use the Police Department, 555 Polk St., to make the exchange, Pawlak said. Many other Northwest Indiana police departments also make their parking lots and lobbies available for such exchanges.
