LAPORTE | A foul smell caused a LaPorte Wal-Mart employee to become ill and triggered an emergency response to what turned out to be a prank.
Initially, firefighters thought a chlorine leak might be at work, but determined the odor was caused by deer urine used by hunters and in the store's sporting goods section.
Police responded about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to the Wal-Mart at 333 Boyd Blvd after a cashier said a customer inquired about a funny smell.
The cashier told the customer that she didn't smell anything, but moments later her mood quickly soured and she ran out the front doors. Despite the fresh air, police said the cashier became ill.
LaPorte Fire Chief Rob Sabie said he talked with store employees, who felt it was the work of a prankster judging from previous incidents.
"Maybe they were going around spraying it around the store. That's what they're saying," Sabie said.
