INDIANAPOLIS | Democrats in the Indiana House adopted an amendment Tuesday that would unravel the strict 180-day school calendar set by Republican state schools chief Tony Bennett.
Starting next school year, the state will not grant waivers for missed snow days and will not allow a pair of half days to count as one day of instruction. The Democratic amendment, adopted on a party-line vote, would undo the strict policy Bennett announced last week.
"With our kids needing major academic improvements, they should spend more days in the classroom, not fewer," Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels said in response. "I'll veto any such measure that reaches my desk."
The Democratic proposal, eligible for a House vote Thursday, is likely to advance in the GOP-ruled Senate. -- By Patrick Guinane, THE TIMES
