DOLTON | Police filed charges Thursday against the driver of a vehicle that a woman fell out of and was killed by a semi on the Bishop Ford Freeway.

Michael D. Johnson, 28, of Edwardsville, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence involving a death, aggravated fleeing and eluding and one count of leaving the scene of a fatal crash. He will have his bond hearing Friday.

Illinois State Police said officers are still trying to figure out how on Tuesday Jennifer Mitchell, 27, fell out of the sport utility vehicle traveling near 154th Street in Dolton. They aren't sure if she was pushed out of the SUV or if she jumped out.

On Wednesday, Illinois State Police said officers were seeking surveillance video from the area where the crash happened. They were also talking to Mitchell's family and friends to try to get information about what happened before the crash.

Mitchell was ejected from the vehicle at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday and was hit by a passing semi, police said. She died at the scene.

Johnson kept driving and crashed at an exit ramp near 127th Street, police said. He then tried to run away on foot, but was stopped by officers.

He has been in police custody since Tuesday, and police said he was not cooperating with authorities.
