CROWN POINT | A Crown Point man died Sunday while burning debris in his yard, officials said.

Charles L. Green, 86, told his two sons who live with him in the 6900 block of East U.S. 231 that he was going outside to burn debris in his yard before a brush fire started, authorities said.

Green was on the east side of the property burning the debris by himself while his two sons were inside, said Patti Van Til, spokeswoman for the Lake County Sheriff Department.

Lakes of the Four Seasons Fire Force Chief Graham Federico said the brush fire was called in about 2 p.m. by someone driving on U.S. 231. It took about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire.

Green died at the scene, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

The coroner's office said Green had burns to his body but did not say what percentage of his body was burnt. The exact cause of his death is pending autopsy results.

Federico said the brush fire did not spread to any surrounding buildings. There were no other reported injuries.
