GARY | Federal law enforcement agents seized boxes of documents from the Gary Sanitary District on Monday, Gary Mayor Rudy Clay confirmed Monday afternoon.
Clay, the district's administrator, said he believes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is looking into allegations of illegal pollution, but he said he didn't know any other details.
"I've heard they are taking boxes and boxes of records. That is about really all I know. I'm the administrator of the sanitary district, but I've only been out there twice since I've been in office," Clay said.
FBI spokeswoman Wendy Osborne said her agency and the Criminal Investigation Division of the EPA were serving search warrants on the district but declined further comment.
Randy Ashe, an acting special agent for the EPA, said the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. Coast Guard, Indiana State Police and Indiana Department of Natural Resources also were involved in the investigation. He declined comment on the kinds of documents other than those pointing to "evidence of environmental crime."
He said federal investigators will be at the sanitary district for a couple of days.
