CHICAGO | Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson will be honored today by Fifth Third Bank Chicago, along with other African-American leaders in Northwest Indiana and the Chicago area.

In recognition of Black History Month, Freeman-Wilson, TV journalist Robin Robinson and Jimmy Akintonde, CEO of Ujamaa Construction, will receive a crystal award and a namesake $5,300 scholarship to pass on to a local high school student heading to his or her first year of college.

The scholarship is designed as a "pay it forward" reward for the honoree.

"I am extremely humbled to be receiving this award in the company of such accomplished individuals," Freeman-Wilson said. "I applaud Fifth Third for including a scholarship component so that our youth may benefit."
