CALUMET CITY | The City Council passed a resolution recommending a significant property tax break for a former warehouse just south of the Little Calumet River that has sat empty in recent years.

Without discussion, the council voted 4-0 — with aldermen Eric Schneider, Thaddeus Jones and Brian Wilson absent — to recommend a Class 8 real estate tax assessment for the one-time Silver Line warehouse, a 44,000-square-foot building at 1550 Huntington Drive.

If granted, the assessment would result in a reduction in property taxes for up to 12 years, and would reduce the amount of money owed in property taxes to local government by more than 50 percent.

To qualify for such a financial break, a property has to have been vacant for at least two years.

Ultimately, the Cook County Board has final say on if the tax break is granted. A decision from the county will likely come later this year.

Also on Thursday, the council voted without opposition to approve a $45,000 payment to the International Association of Firefighters to cover the cost of fire ground survival training for Calumet City firefighters.

The city received a state grant of $40,500 to cover the bulk of the cost of this training.

Also approved was a $4,545 payment to the Southeast Commuter Rail Transit District, the Lansing-based entity that is trying to develop a new commuter train line from Chicago’s LaSalle Street station to Balmoral Park Racetrack near Crete.

Chicago-based M&D will receive a $10,754 payment for printing the quarterly newsletter that will be sent to all Calumet City residents this spring, while East Chicago-based Tierra Environmental & Industrial will receive $6,545 for a sewer cleaning at Greenbay and Harding avenues.
