VALPARAISO | Mayor Jon Costas will be involved in a couple of big races in the coming week.

Costas and nine others are heading to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., which starts Monday and runs through Thursday. Costas is a convention delegate.

On the way, the group will stop in Louisville, Ky., Sunday so Costas can complete in his seventh Ironman triathlon.

"I like challenges, and setting a lofty goal keeps me motivated to work hard," he said. "It really pushes me and teaches me about perseverance and tenacity, qualities that help us be successful in all areas of our lives. I'm not a gifted athlete by any means and usually finish in the middle of the pack, but it's all about finishing and testing your endurance."

Costas often runs on his lunch hour and uses the workouts to visit various city projects.

"While running, I get to see things I might not notice from the car," he said.

After finishing the triathlon's 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and the 26.2-mile run, he and his companions will board a bus for Tampa.

"There will be lots of speeches, and it should be an interesting event," he said of the convention.
