INDIANAPOLIS | Richmond financial adviser Don Bates has formally joined the race for the Republican state treasurer nomination.
Surrounded by family Tuesday as he made the long-expected announcement, Bates pledged to use his 17 years of financial industry experience to protect Hoosiers and the state's investments.
"We need a leader who will treat taxpayers like clients and customers instead of people who make their lives more difficult," Bates said. "We need a businessman and not another government bureaucrat."
Delegates to the 2014 Republican state convention will decide whether Bates gets the party's nomination.
He previously made unsuccessful runs for the Republican U.S. Senate nod in 2010 and for a U.S. House seat in 2012.
Also seeking the GOP treasurer nomination is three-term Marion Mayor Wayne Seybold and Kelly Mitchell, a Valparaiso University graduate who directs the TrustINdiana local government investment pool under State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who cannot run again due to term limits.
