Darren Washington

Age: 41

Gary

Democrat

Office sought: Indiana Senate District 3

Political experience: Bachelor of arts: Millikin University. Master of Public Affairs: Indiana University. President, Gary School Board. Chief Deputy: Lake County recorder's office. Adjunct professor: Ivy Tech, 2011. Lobbyist: City of Gary, 2008.

What prompted your decision to run for this office?: In 2008 and last year, the current state senator asked me to consider running because she was going to retire. Second, it's time for a new voice in Indianapolis that will fight for all communities in District 3, not someone who divides or neglects the district.

Top three goals:

  • Support legislation that will remove the frozen property tax levy placed on Lake County. We must also be prepared to challenge this discriminatory mandate through the judicial branch. Cities and towns need resources to provide services.
  • Economic development packages state allocation from ISTA and MAP-21. Include support for: 1. Hobart's downtown redevelopment, including Lake George and Southlake Mall. 2. Gary's land-based casino. 3. Lake Station economic land development for Deep River.

Why should voters choose you?: Current senator supported: 1. HB 1858, big tax breaks to industry hurt homeowners. 2. Major Moves legislation sold the Toll Road for $3 billion. 3. Levy freeze on Lake County units of government.

What would you do on your first day in office?: 1. Meet with members of the Northwest Indiana legislative delegation. 2. Make calls to speak with and try to meet with fellow state senators. 3. Meet with voters and leadership in District 3 to discuss legislative agenda.

What else would you like to tell us?: As state senator for District 3, my job will begin after I win the primary. I will meet with residents, political, business, educational and community leaders to develop a legislative agenda that will meet the needs of our communities.
