George W Van Til

Age: 64

Office sought: Lake County Surveyor

Political experience: County Surveyor, part-time County Council and Highland Town Council. Also legislative and township experience.

What prompted your decision to run for this office?: I still have a public servant's heart, having worked faithfully and well as your county surveyor, gaining invaluable expertise and understanding through superior problem solving. My opponent ran for three different political offices, and now he runs still again.

Top three goals:

  • Continue developing effective work product through reference to our county drainage master plan with constant input from the County Drainage Advisory Commission, and County Drainage Board, as required by law, along with work by superior professional staff.
  • Finish a fully mature geographic information system, onto our now state-of-the-art mapping system. I started this from scratch, thinking outside the box, because somebody had to. Will expand uses for E 911, sheriff, prosecutor, auditor, parks, highway, etc.
  • Continue developing through political and administrative skills, stormwater control projects, embracing delicate intergovernmental cooperation, led by this office. Maintaining award-winning GIS and MS4 programs, for which we've lowered fees twice.

Why should voters choose you?: I'm a public servant, creating a modern service, information and problem-solving office with less staff, lower administrative costs than imagined ever before. My opponent, a well-connected politician-businessman, comes from the East Chicago engineer's office.

What would you do on your first day in office?: Will thank my fine professional staff, who helped me accomplish so much. Pledge my last four years (God willing) will be the best ever for the taxpayers we serve. Consultants with outside interests will not be running things; the people's interests will!

What else would you like to tell us?: My opponent is a consultant. Years ago he wanted me to hire him. I don't hire consultants per se. He's neither an engineer or surveyor. I'm a stormwater professional, GIS catalyst, skilled administrator and committed public servant wanting to finish the work.
