St. John Township Trustee Jean Shepherd

St. John Township Trustee Jean Shepherd announced this week she will not be running for re-election.

Shepherd, a Republican, said Monday she will be retiring from public office at the end of her term this year.

"I enjoyed being trustee. I will have served 16 years, but it doesn't seem that long because I've always been so involved in the work," she said. She added that she intends to spend more time with family and enjoy traveling and fishing.

She said she enjoyed going door-to-door "until it was so dark you couldn't see the address numbers" to meet voters during her four elections between 2002 and 2014.

She first won office by defeating then incumbent, trustee David Dowling, in 2002, campaigning on the promise to be a full-time township trustee.

She said she will be glad to help the new trustee transition into office "whether they are Democrat or Republican."
