Sylvia Graham
Age: 72
Valparaiso
Democrat
Office sought: Porter County Council
Political experience: As a Porter County Council member since 2009, I attend monthly Council meetings and am on the Plan Commission, EMA, Council on Aging, Economic Redevelopment Commission, Jail Building Corp. and Jail Bond Board. I am liaison to 11 county departments.
What prompted your decision to run for this office?: This is my fourth year on the council of having balanced budgets without raising taxes. I have been a good steward of the people's money and want Porter County to continue its safe and responsible growth. My work is not done.
Top three goals:
- I want to continue to promote quality county services with a cost-efficient county government. Balancing budgets and living within our means has accomplished this. Keeping taxes low is a priority.
- I support using hospital interest money for projects such as the new Sunset Hill Farm barn, a new animal shelter, radio and tower upgrades, and E911 funding. I support bonding for drainage projects. The above will promote safety and provide job growth.
- I support the projects the commissioners have suggested on three intersections on 100S as well as extending Willowcreek Road to U.S. 30. Our main county arterial roads must be upgraded to promote safe growth and movement of our county population.
Why should voters choose you?: I am an IU and Purdue graduate and a family nurse practitioner. I was a Porter County 4-H leader. I am completing my fourth year on the council. My nursing career, my 4-H service, and my council experience make me a qualified and committed candidate.
What would you do on your first day in office?: I will continue to work full-time for the people of Porter County. I will continue to gather data, ask questions, evaluate plans on-site, attend council and board meetings, listen to constituents and serve county residents to the best of my ability.
What else would you like to tell us?: I supported the U.S. 6 Corridor Overlay District and initiatives that improve drainage, give parents the ability to sell their children an acre to build on, and establish a county maintenance ordinance. I appreciate the support of Porter County voters.
