INDIANAPOLIS | Northwest Indiana's three Republican state senators will each lead a Senate committee during the 2013 legislative session.

Senate President David Long, R-Fort Wayne, on Thursday reappointed state Sen. Sue Landske, R-Cedar Lake, chairwoman of the Elections Committee, and state Sen. Brandt Hershman, R-Wheatfield, chairman of the Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee.

Taking charge of the Energy and Environmental Affairs Committee will be state Sen. Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso.

"Each of these lawmakers bring unique professional and personal experiences to the Senate that qualify them to lead their colleagues in related policy discussions," Long said. "Our state Legislature is very fortunate to have the opportunity to tap into their expertise, using it to make Indiana a better place to live, work and raise a family."

This is the first committee chairmanship for Charbonneau, an attorney and former U.S. Steel executive, who has served in the Senate since 2007. He previously led a summer study committee examining Indiana's school funding formula.

"I take a genuine interest in environmental issues as both a citizen and a senator of our state, and I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this new role," Charbonneau said.
