INDIANAPOLIS | A third European nation is set to honor former U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar, R-Ind., for his international relations achievements, and work toward nuclear disarmament.

German President Joachim Gauck has designated Lugar to receive the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit. Peter Ammon, the German ambassador, will present the award to Lugar on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

Lugar was awarded Germany's Knight's Commander's Cross in 1985 for his efforts to improve German-U.S. relations.

In 2012, Lugar was named German-American of the Year by the Indiana German-American Heritage Society.

The retired senator also has been knighted recently by Great Britain and Poland.
