INDIANAPOLIS | The Senate voted 48-0 Tuesday for a Northwest Indiana lawmaker's plan reforming the process for issuing special group license plates.

House Bill 1279, sponsored by state Rep. Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso, creates a bipartisan license plate review committee and requires groups with plates disclose their financial records, in part to stop legislators from establishing plates for groups that don't want them or that fail to meet transparency standards.

The proposal must be re-approved by the House before it can go to the governor, because the Senate dropped a House provision requiring the Bureau of Motor Vehicles create a Vietnam veteran license plate.

Approximately 459,000 Indiana vehicle owners pay an extra $40 a year for a group license plate. The plates raise money for and feature the logos of universities, military branches, charities and community organizations.
