INDIANAPOLIS | The Indiana House voted 96-0 Monday to approve the first legislative proposal sponsored by new state Rep. Rick Niemeyer, R-Lowell.
House Bill 1276, which now goes to the Senate, allows township boards to hold their annual report meeting in February instead of only January, and eliminates the requirement that a board vote unanimously to reduce their salaries.
The second provision, which was added to Niemeyer's legislation by the House on Thursday, is expected to make it easier for township boards to reduce their pay because only a majority vote would be required.
"It makes this bill very much a stronger bill for township government," Niemeyer said.
Niemeyer served 23 years as trustee and auditor of Lake County's West Creek Township before winning election to the House in November.
