INDIANAPOLIS | The Indiana House voted 93-0 Tuesday to join the Senate in urging that the state transportation department rename Gary's Fifth Avenue for the late Gary Mayor Rudy Clay.

State Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, said honoring Clay by renaming the road, also known as U.S. Highway 20, is a fitting tribute for a man whose style and achievements long will be remembered.

Clay served as Gary mayor from 2006 through 2011. He previously was elected state senator and Lake County recorder, councilman and commissioner.

He died June 4, 2013, at age 77.

State Rep. Charlie Brown, D-Gary, co-sponsored Senate Concurrent Resolution 24, which also passed the Senate unanimously.
