INDIANAPOLIS | LaPorte County property owners are likely to receive only one bill for the current tax year after the Indiana Senate on Monday approved a plan to temporarily eliminate the provisional spring tax bill.

Most LaPorte property owners have recently been hit with up to six prior-year property tax billings due to unprecedented delays caused by an assessment dispute.

State Sen. Jim Arnold, D-LaPorte, said after a heroic effort by county officials over the past year, LaPorte County tax billings are nearly back to the normal schedule.

He said House Bill 1261 is intended to reward county staff and taxpayers by allowing them to prepare and pay only one bill, in the fall, for the current tax year.

"LaPorte County will then be caught up and our six-year nightmare will be over," Arnold said.

The House must still approve Senate changes to the legislation before it can go to the governor.
