INDIANAPOLIS | Indiana is taking in less revenue from its gasoline tax as fuel efficient and alternative fuel cars increasingly fill the state's roads and highways.

State Rep. Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso, the chairman of the House Roads and Transportation Committee, sees that as a major problem, as fuel taxes fund Indiana road construction.

But he's optimistic there might be a better way.

That's why Soliday persuaded the House on Tuesday to vote 93-4 for House Bill 1366 ordering the Indiana Department of Transportation to study alternatives to the gas tax for funding streets and highways, including a pilot program taxing motorists for each mile driven.

"This certainly does not mandate any kind of spying on where you travel or anything like that," Soliday said. "It's just a study."

The legislation requiring a review of road funding alternatives now advances to the Senate.
